The Porto empire lamp shade features hand-marbled paper made using a centuries-old process in which paints and oils are dropped onto thickened water and raked into flowing patterns. Each sheet is individually laid onto the surface and lifted, producing a finish that is entirely unique to every shade. The gold and white marbling delivers a bold, luminous appearance with natural variation across the paper surface. Due to the smaller surface area required for this technique, the shade incorporates two seams in its construction.
