The Sophia medium vase combines a hand-misshapen cylindrical form with spontaneous ink blue brushwork of dots and brisk lines in an abstract composition. Designed by Marie Michielssen for Serax, the piece is inspired by the automatic quality of Eastern calligraphy, with the middle of the vase compressed to warp its shape and create an uneven opening. Its artisanal production process ensures no two vases are identical, making each piece entirely unique.
This asymmetrical vase by Serax is intuitively misshapen by the artisan before being spontaneously handpainted. The premise, by designer Marie Michielssen, incorporates the idea of automatic inspiration, employed in Eastern calligraphy. In the medium 'Sophia' vase in ink blue, brushwork features dots and brisk lines in an abstract composition. The middle of the vase is compressed, warping its cylindrial shape and creating an uneven opening. The artisanal nature of production means no two vases are identical, and each piece is entirely unique.
