First produced in 1949, amidst a post-war climate of invention, the ESU was one of the first commercial pieces of design to utilise pre-fabricated parts for use within the home. Designed by Charles & Ray Eames, this shelving unit makes a design feature of the industrial elements that have gone into its production by contrasting black metal frames, unfinished wooden shelves and colourful sheeting.Working with the Eames Office and Dutch designer Hella Jongerius, Vitra sought to provide a fresh look to the ESU by introducing a new colour scheme that was still in keeping with the mid-century feel of design.The success of this shelving system relies not only on its timeless, modern look but also its robust functionality which is available in a range of sizes.
