The William Morris Spring Thicket cushion features the 1893 archive design by John Henry Dearle, originally created as a wallpaper and recoloured in rich shades of teal, mineral, pink, and soft yellow. Printed onto a recycled velvet base, the reversible construction allows both sides to be used, while bright yellow piping provides a defined, decorative edge. The symmetrical tulip and foliage pattern is anchored by a flowering hawthorn motif that ties the repeat together. Measures 45 x 45 cm.
Originally designed as a wallpaper by William Morris' chief designer John Henry Dearle in 1893 and housed in the William Morris Gallery archive, the Spring Thicket design follows the same conventions as William Morris' wallpaper ‘Lily and Pomegranate', designed in 1886. Both patterns follow a symmetrical net repeat, with a large central clump of tulips against a background of foliage. The flowering hawthorn in this design unites the overall pattern. Recoloured in rich shades of teal, mineral, pink and soft yellows and printed onto a luxurious recycled velvet base, this reversible cushion is finished beautifully with a bright yellow piping.
