Frequently Asked Questions

A standard UK pillowcase is 50 × 75 cm, made for a 48 × 74 cm pillow. Square continental or Euro pillowcases are 65 × 65 cm, and king pillowcases are 50 × 90 cm. Check the size of your pillows before buying, as a pillowcase that is too large looks baggy and one too small squashes the pillow.

A housewife pillowcase has a simple internal flap that tucks the pillow in, with no border, which is the everyday style. An Oxford pillowcase has a flat decorative border of around 5 cm on all four sides, which looks more tailored. Many people use housewife pillowcases for sleeping and Oxfords at the front for display.

Many people find mulberry silk reduces frizzy hair and sleep creases because its smooth surface creates less friction. Choose a weight of 19–22 momme for durability, and wash on a delicate cycle or by hand. Silk is cooler than it looks, though some people find it slippery at first. Silk also suits sensitive skin.

Cotton percale and linen are the coolest choices, as both breathe well and wick moisture away, which suits warm sleepers. Sateen feels smoother but warmer. Silk feels cool to the touch initially. Avoid polyester blends if you overheat at night, as they hold heat more than natural fibres. Lighter colours also feel cooler.
