Frequently Asked Questions

Common sizes are 6 × 4 in, 7 × 5 in, 10 × 8 in, A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) and A3 (29.7 × 42 cm). Frames with a mount are larger than the photograph they hold, so check the aperture size, the visible opening, rather than the frame size. Most prints from photo labs come in the inch sizes.

Mix sizes and orientations, overlap frames slightly and keep to one or two frame finishes so the group looks cohesive. Black-and-white photographs help unite frames of different styles. Lean larger frames at the back and place smaller standing frames in front for depth. Leaving gaps between groups stops the surface looking crowded, and rotating photographs seasonally keeps the display fresh.

Black frames give photographs a crisp, graphic edge and suit monochrome prints. White and natural wood feel lighter and suit colourful or family photographs. Brass and gold add warmth. Using one frame colour across a room, or one per wall, makes a mix of photographs look curated. Match frame width to photo size.

Use a frame with a mount cut to fit, or a larger frame with a wide mount, which makes a small print look more substantial. Alternatively, crop and reprint the photograph to a standard size. Floating frames, which sandwich the photo between two panes of glass, work for any size.
