Choose one two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the bed and no taller than the top of the mattress. For a double, that is roughly 90–110 cm; for a king, 110–130 cm. Leave at least 60 cm between the ottoman and any furniture opposite so you can walk past comfortably.

A blanket box is usually wooden with a hinged lid, while a storage ottoman is upholstered and more comfortable to sit on. Both hold spare bedding and throws. If you will sit on it to put on shoes, choose an upholstered top; if it will mainly store things, a wooden box is easier to keep clean.

Around 45 cm for a standard 75 cm dressing table, leaving 25–30 cm between the seat and the tabletop for your knees. A stool that tucks fully beneath the table keeps a small bedroom clearer. If you sit for long, consider a stool with a low back. An upholstered seat is kinder for longer sittings.

Bedroom ottomans see less wear than living room seating, so velvet, bouclé and linen work well. If the ottoman will hold luggage or take shoes, choose a tighter weave or a wipe-clean faux leather. Removable covers are useful in homes with pets. Darker colours and textured weaves hide marks from shoes and bags far better than pale, flat fabrics.

Yes, and that is one of its main uses. A firm, flat top makes it comfortable for putting on shoes and stable for an open suitcase. Check the stated weight limit if it will hold heavy bags, and choose a fabric that will not mark easily. A slatted top avoids marking at all.

A lift-up lid keeps bedding dust-free and out of sight, while open storage beneath a bench seat is quicker to use for shoes or baskets. Choose a lid with a soft-close or stay hinge so it will not drop on fingers. If you will sit on it often, check the lid is supported along its full width.
