Frequently Asked Questions

Start with the focal point, whether a fireplace, a window or the television, and set the sofa to face it. Main walkways need 75–90 cm, and 40–45 cm between sofa and coffee table keeps a cup within reach without crowding your knees. In a larger room, drawing the seating in from the walls creates a conversation group and, counter-intuitively, makes the space feel more generous rather than less.

A sofa, one or two armchairs, a coffee table, a side table within reach of every seat and one storage piece, such as a sideboard, media unit or shelving. Lighting on three levels (ceiling, table and floor) completes it. Buy the sofa first: its length, depth and colour set the scale and palette for everything else, and other pieces are far easier to choose once it is fixed.

Repeat each material or finish at least three times, for example oak in the coffee table, the shelving and a picture frame, and let one wood tone lead. Keep leg styles and seat heights in conversation with one another. Then allow a single piece to break the pattern deliberately. Comparing designs from many retailers side by side makes these connections far easier to spot before you buy.

Piece by piece, in most cases. A matching suite is quick to buy but tends to look like a showroom, while individual pieces let you invest in the sofa and rug and economise on side tables and accessories. The same silhouette often appears at very different prices across retailers, so comparing similar designs before committing can free up budget for the pieces you use most.

Choose furniture raised on legs, so more floor is visible, and keep the largest pieces low and against the longest wall. A rug large enough for the front legs of every seat makes the room read as one space rather than several fragments. Round or oval tables ease circulation, and a mirror opposite or beside a window carries daylight further into the room.

Spend on the pieces you touch every day and expect to keep: the sofa, a reading chair and a good-sized rug. Save on side tables, shelving and accessories, which are easy to replace as your taste changes. Lighting deserves a middle course, since a well-chosen floor or table lamp changes the room's atmosphere more than almost any accessory, at a fraction of the cost of upholstery.
