Frequently Asked Questions

Think in zones: a dining area close to the kitchen door, a lounge area where the evening sun lingers, and a path of at least 90 cm between them. Watch where the light falls at around 6pm in summer before deciding where to sit, as that is when most British gardens are used. Plan power for lighting before laying paving or decking.

New collections arrive from February to April, when choice is at its widest and popular sets are in stock. Prices typically fall in end-of-season sales from late July into September, though the most sought-after designs often sell out first. Comparing across retailers makes it easier to see when a particular style is reduced.

A bistro set with a table of around 60 cm, folding chairs that hang on the wall, or a slim bench along the railing all make good use of limited space. Check the balcony's weight limit before adding heavy stone planters or concrete tables, and choose stackable or folding pieces if you need to store them in winter.

Bring cushions indoors, clean and dry the frames, and use breathable, waterproof covers rather than plastic sheets that trap condensation and encourage mould. Aluminium and synthetic rattan can stay outside under covers, while untreated timber and painted steel are happier in a shed or garage. Raise furniture off wet lawns on feet or slabs.

Give it the elements of an indoor room: something underfoot, such as an outdoor rug or defined paving, a sense of enclosure from planting, trellis or screens, and a ceiling of sorts from a parasol, pergola or string lights. Add lighting for the evening and cushions in a palette that relates to the house, so the two spaces feel connected.

A parasol is the most flexible and easiest to move with the sun; a cantilever parasol shades a seating area without a pole in the middle. A pergola gives a permanent structure that can carry climbing plants or a fabric canopy. A retractable awning attached to the house suits terraces directly outside a door, providing shade at the flick of a switch.
