Frequently Asked Questions

A coffee table around half to two-thirds the length of your sofa is a useful starting point. Choose a tabletop level with the seat cushions or approximately 2–5 cm lower, keeping drinks within comfortable reach. Leave around 40–45 cm between the sofa and table, and more space along main walkways. These are guides rather than fixed rules: mark the table’s outline on the floor to judge how comfortably it fits your seating arrangement.

Rectangular coffee tables work well alongside long sofas, while square designs can suit spacious corner-sofa arrangements. A round coffee table makes it easier to move between seats and softens a room with lots of straight lines. Oval tables provide a longer surface with fewer corners to navigate. With a chaise sofa, measure the open area beside the chaise rather than using the sofa’s full width to judge the table size.

The best material depends on how much maintenance suits your routine. Solid wood brings warmth and can often be refinished; veneer provides a real wood surface but has limited scope for sanding. Glass feels visually lighter, although fingerprints show easily. Marble and travertine offer distinctive natural patterns but need coasters and prompt spill removal; acidic liquids can dull the surface even when sealed. Laminate is often straightforward to wipe clean, though heat resistance varies by product.

Nesting coffee tables suit rooms where the layout needs to change: separate them when guests visit, then tuck them together to free up floor space. Check how fully they overlap, as some sets remain quite wide when nested. One large coffee table provides a continuous surface for books, drinks and a tray, and can feel more balanced beside generous seating. Choose nesting tables for flexibility or a single table for a consistent central arrangement.

Choose a table that leaves room to walk comfortably, rather than simply buying the smallest design. An oval table can suit a narrow seating area, while a compact round table works well between several seats. Slim legs and glass tops keep more of the floor or rug visible. If storage matters, drawers conceal remotes and chargers; an open shelf keeps books within reach but leaves them on display. Allow space to open drawers fully.

Your coffee table can complement the room without belonging to a matching set. Repeat one detail, such as the warm undertone of a timber cabinet or the dark metal of a lamp, then introduce contrast through shape or texture. Beside a deep upholstered sofa, a slim-framed table can keep the arrangement feeling open. With simple seating and a quiet rug, a sculptural wood or patterned stone table can become the focal point.
