Frequently Asked Questions

Beneath a window, along the back of a sofa that floats in the room, in place of a coffee table in a narrow space, or opposite the sofa as backless seating that keeps sightlines open. A bench also makes a natural landing spot in a hallway for removing shoes. Its low, linear shape fills awkward stretches of wall that a chair or table would not.

A seat height of around 45 cm suits most uses. Beneath a window, aim for about two-thirds of the window's width; at the foot of a bed, choose one 15–30 cm narrower than the bed so it does not overhang. Depth matters as much as length: 35–45 cm is comfortable to sit on, while slimmer hallway benches of 30 cm keep walkways clear.

Upholstered benches invite lingering and soften a room's hard surfaces, making them better for living rooms and bedrooms. Wood and metal benches are easier to keep clean and better suited to hallways, boot rooms and dining tables, where they take bags, shoes and spills. If the bench will be sat on daily, a padded seat or a loose cushion makes a real difference.

Yes, and it seats more people in less space than chairs. A bench should be about 30 cm shorter than the table so it tucks under neatly and clears the legs. Backless benches suit children and casual meals but can be tiring for long dinners, so many people pair one bench with chairs on the other side for comfort and visual balance.

In hallways and small homes, yes. A lift-up seat or cubbies underneath keep shoes, bags and dog leads out of sight while giving you somewhere to sit. Check the lid has a stay or soft-close hinge, and that open cubbies are deep enough for adult shoes, typically 30 cm or more. Upholstered tops are more comfortable but show dirt sooner in a busy entrance.

Keep it simple so the bench still invites sitting: one or two cushions at one end, a folded throw, or a neat stack of books. Beneath a window, a long seat cushion turns it into a reading spot. In a hallway, a basket underneath and a mirror or hooks above make it work as a practical drop zone without looking cluttered.
