Combine at least three textures, something smooth such as cotton or linen, something nubby such as bouclé or wool, and something with a sheen such as velvet, within a palette of two or three colours. Rugs, curtains and cushions are the easiest place to start, as they cover the largest areas and set the tone for smaller pieces.
Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and wool breathe well and age with character, which makes them pleasant for bedding and upholstery. Synthetics and blends are tougher, more stain-resistant and usually cheaper, which suits family homes, pets and busy rooms. Many of the most practical textiles blend the two for comfort and durability.
Swap cushion covers, add a throw and change the curtains or rug. These four changes can transform a room's colour palette for far less than new furniture. Rotating seasonally works well too: linen and cotton in lighter shades for summer, wool and velvet in deeper tones for winter. Store off-season covers flat in breathable bags.
Layer heavier textiles: a wool or faux-fur throw, velvet or bouclé cushions, a deeper-pile rug and lined or thermal curtains that close out draughts. Warmer colours such as rust, ochre and deep green feel inviting in low winter light. Adding table and floor lamps in place of a single ceiling light completes the effect.
