A fascinating fabric with a rich history, the textile tradition began in the 17th century when the first pieces of chintz were brought home as a valuable trade commodity by Dutch and Portuguese traders and English spice merchants. The bright and colourfast hand-printed, mordant- and resist-dyed patterns as well as the incredible cotton fabric itself (which was new to the West) were instantly in demand for home furnishings, and later, for clothing.
