Frequently Asked Questions

Choose a TV stand using the television’s actual width and base measurements, not just its advertised screen size, which is measured diagonally. The feet or pedestal must sit fully on the surface, and the stand must support the stated weight. A cabinet wider than the screen usually looks more balanced. If you have a soundbar, allow enough depth to position it without obstructing the screen or the television’s remote sensor.

A comfortable starting point is to position the centre of the screen roughly at eye level when seated. The ideal cabinet height therefore depends on your sofa, television and its base. Mark the screen’s outline on the wall and assess it from your usual seat before choosing a unit. For a wall-mounted television, plan the screen, cabinet and soundbar together so the arrangement feels connected without placing the picture too high.

A shallow TV unit preserves walking space, while a corner cabinet can make use of an awkward layout. Raised legs leave more floor visible; closed cupboards keep games, remotes and cables out of sight. Choose depth carefully, as the television’s base and any equipment still need to fit comfortably. Mark out the whole cabinet before buying, including the space needed to open its doors or drawers.

A mix of open shelves and cupboards often offers the most flexibility. Open compartments provide easy access to consoles and media players, while doors conceal spare accessories. Allow the ventilation space specified for each device, including clearance around the sides and rear. If equipment will sit behind a door, confirm that its remote can operate through it; infrared controls generally need a clear signal path.

Look for cable openings behind the shelves you intend to use, large enough for plugs and connectors to pass through. Internal depth matters too: a device may fit on a shelf but leave no room for its rear connections. A recessed back can help keep wiring tidy, while accessible openings make equipment easier to change. Plan the route to nearby sockets, and assess ventilation separately from cable storage.

Use an existing wood tone, paint colour or metal finish to connect the TV unit with the rest of the room. An exact furniture match is unnecessary: a painted cabinet can sit comfortably alongside a timber coffee table. Plain fronts create a quiet backdrop, while fluted wood or distinctive handles add detail. Keep the top lightly styled, leaving the screen clear and space around any speakers or soundbar.
