Measure the sofa’s full width and depth, then mark its footprint on the floor with masking tape. As a practical guide, allow around 40–45 cm between the sofa and coffee table, and aim for 75–90 cm along main walkways where space permits. Compare actual dimensions, as two-seater and three-seater sizes vary between brands. Slim arms maximise seating space within a smaller footprint. Check doorways, stairs and delivery access too.
A corner sofa describes the shape; a modular sofa describes a design made from separate sections. A sofa can be both. Corner sofas create a generous seating area and can help define an open-plan room. Modular designs offer more flexibility, although not every module can be moved into any position. Check connection points, finished sides and available configurations. For chaise or corner designs, confirm left- or right-hand orientation against the retailer’s diagram.
For busy homes, tightly woven fabrics and upholstery with a specified easy-clean finish are useful starting points. Linen offers a relaxed texture but creases readily; velvet brings depth of colour and can show pressure marks. Bouclé adds softness and texture, although looped yarns may catch on pets’ claws. Leather can be practical to wipe down, depending on its finish, but may scratch. Compare the specific fabric’s care instructions and durability, and check whether removable covers are washable.
Start with how you sit: shallower seats and supportive backs suit upright sitting, while deeper seats invite lounging. Foam cushions generally offer a more structured feel; feather-filled cushions feel softer but need regular plumping. Foam cores with softer wraps can balance support and comfort. Visually, slim legs and tailored shapes complement contemporary or mid-century rooms, while scroll arms suit traditional interiors. Choose upholstery alongside your rug, flooring and curtains, checking swatches in different light.
A loveseat usually sits between an armchair and a standard two-seater sofa in size, offering generous room for one or a close seat for two. The terms overlap, so usable seat width matters more than the label. Broad arms can make a loveseat surprisingly large without providing much extra sitting space. Choose one for a reading corner or bedroom; for two adults sitting together regularly, compare internal seat dimensions with a full two-seater.
Match the sofa bed to how often guests will sleep on it. Fold-out designs may have a separate mattress, while click-clack models use the seat and back as the sleeping surface; neither mechanism alone guarantees comfort. For regular use, check that the manufacturer recommends it for that purpose, and compare support, mattress construction and sleeping dimensions. Bed-size labels can vary. Measure the fully opened footprint, including clearance to operate the mechanism, and check its comfort as an everyday sofa.
