Frequently Asked Questions

A side table usually sits beside a sofa or armchair, keeping a drink, book or lamp within reach. Occasional table is a broader term for a small table used wherever an extra surface is needed. The names often overlap, so focus on dimensions and function: a table for a reading corner needs space for everyday essentials, while a sculptural piece beside a window may serve mainly as a decorative accent.

A side table is usually easiest to use when its top sits level with the sofa arm or a few centimetres below it. This keeps drinks within reach without an awkward upward movement. Measure from the floor to the top of the arm, rather than using the sofa’s overall height. With an armless sofa or lounge chair, use your seated position as the guide: you should be able to reach the tabletop comfortably without leaning.

Start with what needs to fit on top. A compact surface may be enough for a cup and a book, while a table lamp needs a larger top with room left around its base. A paper template of the tabletop can help you test the arrangement. Beside a sofa, keep the table’s depth within the seating’s overall depth where possible, and allow drawers or cupboard doors to open without moving neighbouring furniture.

The best small-space side table solves a specific problem. Nesting tables provide extra surfaces for visitors, then tuck together; a drawer conceals remotes and chargers; an open shelf keeps books below the tabletop. A C-shaped table brings the surface over the edge of the seat, provided its base clears the sofa underneath. Round tops suit exposed corners beside walking routes, while square tables use the gap between a sofa and a wall efficiently.

Side tables do not need to match the coffee table, but a shared detail helps the room feel considered. Repeat a timber tone, metal finish or shape, then vary another element. A substantial oak coffee table, for example, pairs well with a finer metal side table that gives the arrangement some breathing room. Matching side tables bring symmetry to a sofa; different designs work well when one side needs a lamp and the other only a small surface for drinks.

For everyday use, start with the finish and its care requirements: a protective lacquer can make a timber table more forgiving, although coasters are still useful. Glass suits spaces where you want an open view through the furniture, but fingerprints show readily. Marble or travertine makes a distinctive accent through natural pattern and texture, with more care needed around spills and acidic drinks. Metal offers anything from a slim, understated frame to a polished statement piece; upkeep varies with the coating.
