Frequently Asked Questions

An ottoman is usually an upholstered piece with a structured base, sometimes incorporating storage. A pouffe is typically more compact, often with soft filling and no visible legs. Footstool describes the main purpose: supporting your feet while seated. Retailers use these terms loosely, so compare construction, dimensions and intended use. A firm ottoman may double as occasional seating, while a softly filled pouffe can compress considerably under weight.

For resting your feet, start with a footstool level with or slightly lower than your sofa’s seat when you are sitting on it. A taller footstool may lift your legs uncomfortably, while a much lower one provides a different lounging position. Consider cushion compression on both pieces, especially with soft pouffes. Choose enough surface area to support your feet comfortably, and leave room to move the footstool aside when it is not in use.

A broad ottoman with a firm, reasonably flat top can replace a coffee table while also providing somewhere to put your feet up. Use a rigid tray that sits securely for drinks and smaller objects; deeply buttoned or very soft tops are less suitable. Allow roughly 40–45 cm between the ottoman and sofa as a starting point for access. If you frequently serve drinks or food, a dedicated hard surface may be more practical.

Compare internal storage dimensions rather than judging capacity from the outside: padding, frames and hinges can reduce the usable space. A wide compartment suits throws and spare cushions, while a smaller one may be enough for games or accessories. Consider how the lid opens, whether it stays supported and whether you can reach inside without moving nearby furniture. Lift-off lids need somewhere to be placed, whereas hinged designs require clearance throughout their opening arc.

Some ottomans and pouffes are designed for occasional seating, but not every footstool can safely support a seated adult. Look for an explicit seating recommendation and any stated weight limit. A stable base and firm top generally make sitting down and standing up easier than a low, softly filled pouffe. Compare the height with nearby seating too: a very low pouffe may suit relaxed lounging but feel awkward in a more upright conversation area.

Repeat the sofa’s upholstery for a coordinated look, or introduce contrast through pattern, texture or shape. A patterned ottoman can add detail beside a plain sofa, while a round pouffe softens an angular seating arrangement. Consider contact and cleaning as well as appearance: looped fabrics may catch on footwear buckles or pets’ claws, and pale upholstery can show marks. For frequent use, prioritise clear care instructions and removable, washable covers where available.
