A drink table is a compact surface designed to keep a glass or cup within reach of a seat. It usually has a smaller top than a side table, making it useful beside an armchair or where space is limited. Choose a side table if you also need room for a lamp and books; a drink table suits a simpler arrangement with just the essentials.
A top close to the height of the chair or sofa arm is a useful starting point, allowing you to set down a drink without reaching awkwardly. For low or armless seating, judge the height from your seated position instead. Measure beside the actual seat before buying: a table that looks well proportioned in a photograph may feel too high or low alongside your furniture.
Choose a top large enough for the drinks you actually use, with space to set them down comfortably rather than balancing them near the edge. Measure the base as well as the top, since a pedestal foot may extend further than expected. A C-shaped table can bring the surface closer to your seat, provided its base fits beneath the furniture and the top clears the cushion or arm.
The finish matters as much as the material. Marble brings natural pattern but needs protection from acidic spills; timber adds warmth but can mark from moisture or heat. Glass is easy to wipe, although fingerprints show readily, while coated metal varies in scratch resistance. Follow the maker’s care guidance and use suitable coasters: a table intended for drinks is not automatically resistant to hot mugs or condensation.
Place it beside the seat where your hand naturally reaches, clear of the main walking route. The whole base should rest on a firm, level surface rather than straddling a rug edge. For slender pedestal designs, consider the base width and weight as well as the table’s appearance. Keep the top mostly clear so there is a dependable place to put down a glass.
Choose a drink table when you need a convenient spot for a cup or glass beside a seat. A drinks trolley serves a different purpose, providing space for bottles, glassware and serving accessories. For entertaining, the two can work together: the trolley holds supplies while small tables give guests somewhere to put their drinks. If choosing a wheeled trolley, consider its parking space, shelf clearance and whether the castors lock.
