Frequently Asked Questions

Choose desk dimensions around your equipment and daily tasks, not just the available wall space. A laptop and notebook need less room than a separate monitor, keyboard and paperwork. Lay out your essentials on an existing surface and measure the width and depth they occupy, allowing room to move the mouse comfortably. Include space behind the desk for cables and beneath it for your chair and legs.

Choose a desk height that lets you use the keyboard with relaxed shoulders and your elbows close to your sides. Consider the chair and desk together: your feet should be supported, with enough clearance beneath the desktop for your thighs. A deep drawer or crossbar can reduce that space. For an adjustable desk, compare its minimum and maximum heights with your seated and standing requirements, rather than relying on the overall adjustment range.

A compact writing desk suits lighter laptop use, while a corner desk can make an awkward layout more useful. A bureau or hideaway desk lets you close away work at the end of the day, particularly in a bedroom or living room. Measure these designs both open and closed, including chair space. Avoid choosing a very shallow surface if it leaves too little room for your screen and keyboard.

Built-in drawers keep stationery and paperwork close without adding another piece of furniture. However, drawer units can narrow the space available for your chair and legs. Separate storage offers more flexibility if your equipment or layout changes. Choose around what you need to put away: a slim stationery drawer will not accommodate files, and a cupboard needs suitable internal dimensions for larger items such as a printer.

Look for a height range that suits both sitting and standing, alongside a desktop large enough for your equipment. Check the lifting capacity against the manufacturer’s definition of the load, and assess stability at the heights you expect to use. Memory settings can make frequent adjustments simpler. Leave sufficient cable slack for movement, and ensure shelves, windowsills or nearby furniture will not obstruct the desk as it rises.

Look for details that connect with the room’s existing furniture, such as a timber tone, painted finish or handle shape. A writing desk with slim legs can feel less imposing than an enclosed office desk, while a bureau keeps work out of view. If the desk will face into the room, check that its back is finished and plan cable routes so the arrangement looks considered from every angle.
