Frequently Asked Questions

A console table provides a relatively shallow surface for lighting, display or everyday essentials, usually against a wall or behind a sofa. In a hallway, it creates a place for keys and post; in a living room, it can hold lamps, books or a few collected objects. Choose its features around the role: drawers keep small items out of sight, while an open frame leaves more of the floor visible.

Measure the available wall space, then consider depth: a console that fits neatly along a wall may still extend too far into the room. Mark its footprint on the floor and allow space for nearby doors and drawers to open. Height should suit its setting, too. Behind a sofa, a top level with or slightly below the sofa back usually looks balanced; beneath a mirror, leave enough separation for both pieces to feel distinct.

For a narrow hallway, look for a shallow console whose top and base both sit clear of the main walking route. Some slim designs are around 20–30cm deep, but the right depth depends on your passage width and door positions. Rounded corners can soften an exposed edge, while a half-moon console offers a curved front with a flat back against the wall. Follow the retailer’s anchoring instructions, particularly for tall, shallow designs.

Choose drawers for the things you want to hide and shelves for the things you need to reach easily. A shallow drawer is useful for keys, chargers and post, though internal dimensions matter if you plan to store larger items. A lower shelf can hold books or baskets, provided there is enough clearance. If storage is already covered elsewhere, an open console gives a hallway or living room a less crowded appearance.

Material affects both the console’s character and how it wears. Timber brings warmth to an entrance, with grain and finish determining whether it feels rustic or refined. Glass and slender metal frames keep the outline light, although glass shows fingerprints readily. Marble and travertine offer distinctive natural pattern but need care around spills and acidic liquids. For a busy hallway, prioritise a finish suited to daily use and place keys in a tray to protect the top.

Start with one focal point, such as a mirror or artwork, then add a lamp or vase to introduce height. Balance it with a lower object—a bowl, tray or small stack of books—and leave part of the surface empty. In a hallway, reserve an accessible spot for everyday essentials. Scale matters more than quantity: a few substantial pieces often sit better on a long console than a row of small ornaments.
