Frequently Asked Questions

The main difference is seat height. Counter stools suit kitchen islands and worktops, while bar stools are designed for taller bar surfaces. Retailers sometimes use these names interchangeably, so choose by measurements rather than the product title. Look specifically at seat height: the overall height includes the backrest and will not tell you whether the stool fits comfortably beneath your counter.

Measure from the floor to the underside of your worktop, then subtract around 25–30cm to find a starting seat height. For example, an underside height of 90cm suggests a seat around 60–65cm high. Allow for any supporting frame that reduces thigh clearance, and make sure the overhang provides room for knees. With adjustable stools, check that your preferred height falls within the seat’s adjustment range.

Allow roughly 60cm of usable counter length per person as a starting point, with extra room for broad seats, armrests or swivel movement. A 180cm seating space may therefore accommodate three slim stools, but not necessarily three wide upholstered chairs. Measure between end panels and supports, and leave room behind occupied seats for people to pass. The stool’s base should also fit without crowding neighbouring footrests.

Choose a backrest if the island is somewhere you regularly eat or spend time talking. Backless stools suit shorter stops and can tuck out of sight, provided the seat and base fit beneath the overhang. A low back keeps the outline discreet while offering some support. For comfort, consider the whole seat: its depth, shape and footrest position matter as much as cushioning or back height.

A swivel seat lets you turn towards the room without moving the whole stool, which is useful in an open-plan kitchen. Allow enough clearance for the back and arms to rotate without hitting the worktop or nearby seating. Fixed stools offer a simpler arrangement, though you may need to pull them out further to sit down. Swivelling does not necessarily mean height-adjustable, so compare those features separately.

For frequent meals, prioritise surfaces you can clean easily and finishes that tolerate everyday use. Timber and coated metal seats are usually straightforward to wipe, while upholstery adds softness but requires more attention to spills. Compare the fabric’s care instructions rather than assuming a dark colour will be practical. Footrests deserve attention too, as shoes can mark them. A timber tone or upholstery colour repeated elsewhere in the kitchen will help the stools feel at home.
