An armchair is a single seat with armrests; an accent chair adds interest through its shape, colour or material and may have arms or be armless. One chair can be both. For occasional seating in a bedroom or hallway, a compact, upright design can work well. For reading or relaxing every day, give more weight to seat depth, cushioning and back support than to the retailer’s label.
Choose a seat depth that lets you rest against the backrest with your feet on the floor, and armrests that support your elbows without lifting your shoulders. A higher back may support your head when leaning back, depending on your height and the chair’s shape. Foam cushions generally feel more structured; feather-filled cushions feel softer but need plumping. A footstool lets you stretch out without choosing an excessively deep seat that leaves your back unsupported.
Compare overall width with usable seat width: broad arms can take up considerable space without adding sitting room. Slim arms and exposed timber or metal frames offer a lighter appearance, while raised legs keep more of the floor visible. Mark the chair’s full dimensions on the floor, allowing space to sit down and walk past. For swivel chairs and recliners, include the clearance needed to turn or extend, rather than measuring only their stationary footprint.
An accent chair does not need to match the sofa, but a shared colour, material or shape helps the pairing feel considered. Beside a plain sofa, patterned upholstery can introduce detail; with a patterned sofa, a quieter fabric gives the eye somewhere to rest. An exposed timber frame can also provide contrast beside generous upholstery. Compare seat heights and overall proportions, particularly when pairing a low lounge chair with a tall, upright sofa.
Choose upholstery around how often the chair will be used and where you touch it most: upholstered arms receive regular contact, so easy-care fabric can be valuable. Velvet offers rich colour but may show pressure marks; linen creases naturally, and bouclé’s loops may catch on pets’ claws. Protected leather is generally easier to wipe clean than aniline leather, which has little protective coating and absorbs spills more readily. Compare care instructions and request a swatch before deciding.
Angle an accent chair towards the sofa for conversation, or pair it with a reachable side table and a lamp for reading. Position the light to illuminate the page without shining into your eyes. Leave doorways and main walking routes clear. Around 40–45 cm between the chair and coffee table is a useful starting point, adjusted for comfortable reach. Swivel and reclining chairs need additional clearance throughout their full range of movement.
