The vase features a seamless cup shape with a distinctive charred finish that creates non-homogeneous textures of black, grey and earth tones. Its handcrafted ceramic construction uses traditional Portuguese 'barro preto' techniques, where clay items are buried and fired in underground pits. The dark matte surface tells the story of production through touch alone, while the minimal design adds contemporary accent to any space.
With the 'Charred Vase' series, Origin Made celebrates the declining Portuguese art of 'barro preto', defined by the presence of a non-homogeneous texture of black, grey and earth tones amongst ceramics. These emerge following a process where clay items are buried and fired in an underground pit called a 'soenga' for a dark matte texture that tells the story of production through touch alone. Here, the process manifests in a family of vases designed by Gabriel Tan and handcrafted by João Lourenço, such as this seamless and minimal cup shaped piece, which introduces an elevated contemporary accent to spaces.
