Visually a mixture of playfulness and straightforwardness and haptically a material combination that could not be more different - so Reef represents an extremely strong character lighting object. The base of the luminaire, a shiny polished fixture with corners and edges made of high-quality aluminum, appears quite unspectacular so far. But what then rather arouses the interest of the viewer is the shade of the lamp, whose material components are not visible at first glance. Few people will even be aware of this unusual material, since it is quite rare to encounter it in everyday life. Reef's shade is made of ceramic foam, a special material that is used, for example, in the field of thermal insulation. Ceramic foam is usually made of aluminum oxide and foam-forming components, which form tiny bubbles when heated and eventually bring about this characteristic structure. Such a striking material with a pore content of more than 96 percent, which is also characterized by heavy flammability, heat resistance and special durability, literally cries out to be used in the field of lighting technology and to prove how fascinating light can be when it is combined with the appropriate materials. That's what the designers at next space, an interior design firm based in Kassel, Germany, thought and came up with the Reef luminaire series. Thanks to the fine-pored ceramic foam, this wall luminaire creates a lighting effect through the incident light that no other luminaire can match. Reef can be installed as an uplight or as a downlight and thus adapts to the individual circumstances of each room and, of course, to the individual wishes of each user. To top it all off, Reef's shade is dishwasher safe and can thus be cleaned in the best possible way. It can also be dimmed as desired via a phase-on or phase-off dimmer connected externally to the fixture. What here fills the room with its indescribable light, is truly a masterpiece of the art of lighting!
