Dome Shaped Vase - Black, Ceramic

The vase offers an abstract dome shape with charred ceramic construction that displays varied textures of black, grey and earth tones. Its handcrafted finish emerges from traditional Portuguese 'barro preto' firing techniques in underground pits called 'soenga'. The dark matte surface provides tactile storytelling, while the minimal form brings contemporary accent to various spaces.

With the 'Charred Vase' series, Origin Made celebrates the declining Portuguese art of 'barro preto', defined by the presence of a non-homogeneous texture of black, grey and earth tones amongst ceramics. These emerge following a process where clay items are buried and fired in an underground pit called a 'soenga' for a dark matte texture that tells the story of production through touch alone. Here, the process manifests in a family of vases designed by Gabriel Tan and handcrafted by João Lourenço, such as this minimal and abstract dome shaped vase, which brings an elevated contemporary accent to spaces.
