Self Portraits: From 1800 to the Present

The book curates over sixty self-portraits spanning from 1800 to the present day, selected by Philippe Ségalot and Morgane Guillet and arranged chronologically to create an immersive gallery-like reading experience. Each work is reproduced at scale without distraction, allowing close engagement with pieces across a range of mediums including painting, photography, neon, and found objects. The selection traces how artists have continually redefined self-portraiture, featuring works from Claude Monet, Félix Vallotton, and Gustave Caillebotte through to David Hammons, Elizabeth Peyton, and Steven Shearer. An introductory text by Robert Storr, former Dean of Yale School of Art, provides critical context for the collection.
