This cooking staple comes to us from a collective of makers in Japan’s Shimane Prefecture, who combine traditional Japanese craftsmanship with more modernized designs in an effort to keep their country’s age-old crafts alive for future generations. Modeled after a traditional suribachi, or grinding bowl, Kenji’s mortar is handmade from ceramic, with a subtle pouring spout, a soft matte cream glazed exterior and an unglazed, ridged interior. This jagged interior texture allows you to grind your ingredients down to the perfect consistency — with the help of the pestle, of course, which is carved from wood sourced from native Sansho pepper trees for an earthy feel.
