The Langkawi Sunrise Sculpture combines handcrafted quality with its anthropomorphic design carved from a single block of responsibly sourced teak. Its natural brown finish features mineral-rich oil varnishing that highlights the wood grain, while the graphic two-part construction creates striking visual contrast. The sculpture offers rhythmic symmetry in its mask-inspired form, and the solid teak construction provides lasting appeal.
Belgian designer Stefan Schöning's 'Langkawi' decorative mask collection for Gardeco pays homage to the skilled woodcarvers of the Malaysian island by the same name. Five anthropomorphic designs are carved by hand from a single block of responsibly sourced Langkawi teak. The finished pieces, presented in natural brown, are varnished with a mineral-rich oil that further enhances the grain. The sculptures exude rhythm and play with symmetry, echoing Schöning's minimalistic style. The family of mask-inspired pieces includes 'Sunrise', a dynamic, graphic interplay between two parts, which — in the tradition of mask-making — speaks to what it means to be human.
