Wilson, a Scottish-American poet, naturalist, and illustrator, is widely recognised as the Father of American Ornithology and preceded John Audubon in documenting North American bird species. The print depicts one of the 268 birds Wilson illustrated, with multiple species sharing the plate — a detail reflecting the modest budget under which the original work was produced. 26 of Wilson's illustrated species had not been previously described at the time of publication.
