Not only does this process help to preserve an age-old African art form, it also allows these female artisans to earn a reliable income for themselves and their families without having to resort to work that is environmentally damaging. Rather than a factory setting, these makers often work from their homes or in local, self-governed women’s groups, which both fosters a sense of community and allows BeadWORKS to operate in harmony with their employee’s traditional semi-nomadic lifestyles.
