We reimagined this piece from an antique naturalist illustration depicting several species of these winged insects, which caught our attention as we leafed through stacks of delicate, aged pages at a Paris flea market. Upon closer inspection, we were delighted to find that this particular page dated all the way back to the late 1700s, when it appeared as as highly-detailed, hand-colored plate in an encyclopedia of entomology. Out of the many butterflies depicted, our eyes were especially drawn to this beauty — so, once back in Chicago, we got right to work on our reinterpretation, upping its scale, tweaking a few colors and removing any surrounding text to create a giclée print with a fresh, updated feel. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the final product, which holds its own in modern traditional spaces alike while also honoring the old-school charm of that original etching.
