A couch should run about two-thirds the length of its wall, enough to anchor the room while leaving it room to breathe. Loveseats typically measure 52–72 inches and standard sofas 72–90 inches. Measure door widths, hallway turns and stairwells, along with the sofa's diagonal depth, which is what decides whether it can be angled through a doorway on delivery day.
Check the Wyzenbeek double-rub count: 15,000 or more is generally considered heavy duty for the home. Performance fabrics such as solution-dyed acrylics and tightly woven polyester blends handle kids and pets best, while leather develops a patina over time. Note the cleaning code too: W (water-based), S (solvent), W/S (either) or X (vacuum only), as it decides how easily spills come out.
A sectional offers the most seating and gives an open-plan room a clear anchor. A sofa paired with an accent chair is more flexible, easier to rearrange and simpler to move to a new home. Sectionals are sold as left-arm facing (LAF) or right-arm facing (RAF), determined as you stand facing the piece, so confirm the configuration against your room plan before ordering.
The best modern sleepers are a world away from the old bar-across-the-back designs. Look for a memory-foam or innerspring mattress at least 4.5 inches thick, and choose a queen size if two people will share it. Measure the room with the bed fully extended, typically around 90 inches from the sofa back, leaving space to walk around the foot.
Look beneath the upholstery: a kiln-dried hardwood frame with corner blocks or doweled joints, sinuous or eight-way hand-tied springs, and high-resilience foam of 1.8 lb density or higher. Removable, washable covers extend a sofa's life. Product pages that spell out the frame, suspension and cushion fill are usually describing a better-built piece than those that only mention color and size.
A well-built couch with a hardwood frame and sprung seat typically costs about $1,500–$3,500. Under roughly $800, the compromise usually lies in the frame or suspension; above $4,000, you are paying for a design name, natural fabrics or custom upholstery. Custom orders are commonly final sale, so confirm the retailer's return terms before ordering anything made to your specification.
