Match the height of the couch or chair arm, or go up to 2 inches lower, which is usually 20–26 inches. That keeps drinks within easy reach and puts a lamp at a comfortable reading height. A table much higher than the arm feels awkward to use, while one much lower means leaning over every time you set something down.

It is an umbrella term for small, movable tables used as needed: end tables, nesting tables, accent tables and drink tables. American retailers more often say accent or end table, while occasional table is common in British and European catalogs. In practice, it is the table you pull beside a guest's chair or carry out to the patio.

No. Mismatched end tables on either side of a couch often look more collected, as long as their heights are close. Connect them with one shared detail, such as a repeated finish, color or a pair of matching lamps. Matching pairs suit symmetrical, formal rooms, especially when the sofa faces a fireplace or a large window.

Every seat should have a surface within arm's reach. That usually means one at each end of the couch and one beside each accent chair. In small spaces, a C-table that slides over the couch arm serves one seat without taking up any extra floor. In open layouts, make sure the end tables don't block the path between seats.

For a drink and a phone, 12–16 inches across is plenty. If the table will also hold a lamp, allow at least 18 inches so the lamp base and a cup fit comfortably. Stability matters as much as size: narrow pedestal bases can tip if leaned on, so look for a heavy or wide base.

For small spaces and anyone who entertains, yes. A set of two or three gives you one table day to day and extra surfaces for guests, then tucks back into one footprint. Check that the legs slide past each other smoothly and that the tops resist water rings and heat, since the smaller tables usually end up holding drinks.
