The Charred Vase celebrates the Portuguese art of 'barro preto' with its distinctive non-homogeneous texture of black, grey and earth tones. Handcrafted by João Lourenço using traditional techniques, each piece is buried and fired in an underground pit called a 'soenga' to achieve its dark matte finish. The spherical vessel features abstract aesthetics that tell the story of production through touch alone, while its cone shape suits single stem arrangements.
With the 'Charred Vase' series, Origin Made celebrates the declining Portuguese art of 'barro preto', defined by the presence of a non-homogeneous texture of black, grey and earth tones amongst ceramics. These emerge following a process where clay items are buried and fired in an underground pit called a 'soenga' for a dark matte texture that tells the story of production through touch alone. Here, the process manifests in a family of vases designed by Gabriel Tan and handcrafted by João Lourenço, such as this spherical vessel with its abstract aesthetics that together introduce an elevated contemporary accent to spaces and is suited to single stems.
