The Charred Cup Vase celebrates the Portuguese art of 'barro preto' with its distinctive non-homogeneous texture of black, grey and earth tones. Handcrafted using traditional techniques, the ceramic piece is buried and fired in an underground pit called a 'soenga' to achieve its dark matte finish. The seamless cup shape provides a minimal accent, while the unique firing process ensures each piece tells its own story through touch and visual texture.
With the 'Charred Vase' series, Origin Made celebrates the declining Portuguese art of 'barro preto', defined by the presence of a non-homogeneous texture of black, grey and earth tones amongst ceramics. These emerge following a process where clay items are buried and fired in an underground pit called a 'soenga' for a dark matte texture that tells the story of production through touch alone. Here, the process manifests in a family of vases designed by Gabriel Tan and handcrafted by João Lourenço, such as this seamless and minimal cup shaped piece, which introduces an elevated contemporary accent to spaces.
