Frequently Asked Questions

A console table is a slim table for entryways, behind a couch, under a wall-mounted TV or along a hallway. It gives you a landing spot for keys and mail, a surface for a lamp and a base for a mirror or art. In open floor plans, a console behind the couch also helps divide the living area from the rest of the room.

Most console tables are 30–32 inches tall and 10–16 inches deep, with skinny entryway versions around 8 inches. Behind a couch, keep the console at or below the couch back and shorter than the couch, so it reads as part of the grouping. In a hallway, leave at least 36 inches of clear walkway beside it.

Anchor one end with height, such as a lamp or branches in a tall vase, hang a mirror or art above, and balance the other end with a tray or stacked books. Tuck baskets or stools underneath to use the space below. An asymmetric arrangement feels relaxed, while matching lamps suit a more formal entry.

One that is at least 16 inches deep and about 30 inches tall can work as a laptop desk. Make sure there is knee clearance under the apron and room to slide in a chair. It suits occasional work, but a full-time setup with a monitor needs a deeper surface of 24 inches or more.

Look for a depth of 8–12 inches and legs that don't extend past the top. Demilune tables have no sharp corners to catch as you pass, and floating consoles keep the floor clear, making a tight hall feel wider. Check vent and outlet positions and door swings before choosing the length.

Drawers keep keys, chargers and mail out of sight, which suits a busy entryway. An open lower shelf holds baskets or books and looks lighter, which helps in small spaces. Behind a couch, an open design keeps the room feeling airy, while drawers are more useful right by the front door.
