Frequently Asked Questions

Choose a coffee table roughly two-thirds the length of your couch, within 1–2 inches of the seat height, usually 16–18 inches. Place it 16–18 inches from the couch, close enough to reach a drink and far enough to walk past. With a sectional, measure the longer side and consider a round or square table that serves both arms.

Rectangular tables echo a long sofa and suit formal arrangements. Round and oval tables pair naturally with sectionals, improve traffic flow in tighter rooms and remove sharp corners at toddler height. In a narrow room, an oval gives you the reach of a rectangle with easier movement around the ends.

Sealed hardwood is the most forgiving and can be refinished. Marble and travertine etch from wine and citrus unless sealed often; with kids, a honed finish hides etching far better than polished. Glass shows fingerprints but makes small rooms feel airier. Stone and concrete tops are heavy, so plan for delivery and who will carry them in.

For apartments and anyone who eats or works from the couch, yes. A lift-top raises the surface to laptop or dining height, while drawers and shelves hide remotes and clutter. Look for a gas-assisted hinge that lowers smoothly, and compare the raised height with your seat height before you buy.

Nesting tables, two small drink tables, a firm ottoman or a C-table that slides over the couch arm all work well. Each frees floor space and can be moved when needed. Nesting tables are the most flexible, since the smaller table pulls out for guests and tucks back underneath afterward.

Expect roughly $150–$600 for a solid-wood or veneer table and $800–$2,000 for marble, travertine or lacquer designs, with designer pieces costing more. Material drives price more than size, so filtering by material is the quickest way to find a similar look for less. Check the weight of stone tops, as shipping heavy pieces can add to the cost.
