Frequently Asked Questions

Twin 38 × 75 inches, twin XL 38 × 80, full 54 × 75, queen 60 × 80, king 76 × 80 and California king 72 × 84. Imported frames may use metric sizes, so confirm the mattress and frame match. Bedding sizes follow the mattress, and a California king needs specific sheets rather than standard king.

Platform beds need no box spring and sit lower, panel and sleigh beds feel more traditional, storage beds hide drawers or a lift-up compartment, and canopy beds suit tall ceilings. If storage is the priority, a lift-up storage bed holds the most; if you like airflow and an open look, choose a frame on legs.

Most memory-foam and hybrid mattresses need a solid platform or slats no more than about 3 inches apart. A box spring is optional with many modern frames and is mainly used to add height or support a traditional innerspring mattress. Check your mattress warranty before choosing a frame, as unsuitable support can void it.

Aim for at least 20–28 inches above the mattress so you can sit up comfortably against pillows. Overall heights of 50–60 inches create a statement under standard 8-foot ceilings. Measure your mattress depth first, since a thick mattress can hide much of a short headboard. Wider headboards that extend past the bed can also frame nightstands.

Upholstered beds are comfortable to lean against and feel tailored, but need regular vacuuming and can attract pet claws; removable or performance fabrics help. Wood and metal frames are low-maintenance and long-lasting. If you often read in bed, a padded headboard is the more comfortable choice. Metal beds suit smaller rooms, since their open frames look lighter.

A solid queen or king frame typically costs $300–$900, while upholstered and storage beds often run $900–$2,500 and designer frames more. The mattress is usually separate, so budget for both. Extra spend mainly buys a stronger frame, better slats and finer upholstery; comfort comes chiefly from the mattress. Check slat spacing and center support legs on queen and king frames.
