Frequently Asked Questions

Set the bed against the longest solid wall, with a view of the door if possible and not directly under a window. Allow 24–30 inches around the bed and about 36 inches in front of dressers and closets so drawers and doors open fully. Nightstands, lighting and the rug then follow the bed's position.

Allow roughly 2 feet on each side and at the foot of the bed so you can walk around it and make it easily. A queen generally needs a room of at least 10 by 10 feet; a king, 12 by 12 feet or more. In tighter rooms, pushing one side of the bed against a wall saves space but makes the bed harder to change.

Start with a statement headboard, layered bedding in a tight palette, a pair of matching bedside lamps and blackout drapes. A bench at the foot of the bed completes the look. Then edit: the calm of a good hotel room comes as much from clear surfaces and hidden storage as from anything you bring in.

A lift-up storage bed, a tall chest instead of a wide dresser, floating nightstands and over-door organizers all help. Sliding wardrobe doors save the floor space that swing doors need. Under-bed drawers or bins suit seasonal clothing, keeping everyday pieces in easier reach. Wall hooks and a slim shelf above the door use space that usually goes to waste.

Choose the bed first, then pick storage that shares one element with it, such as wood tone, hardware finish or leg style, rather than buying a matched set. Keep nightstand heights close to the mattress top, and let one piece, often the headboard or dresser, carry the boldest color or texture.

Put the most money into what affects sleep and daily use: the mattress, a sturdy bed frame and quality bedding. Next comes storage you open every day, such as a dresser, where drawer glides and joinery matter. Nightstands, lamps and decor are easier places to save, and simpler to update later.
